On Notation

Does the world really need another music scoring application?

Time will tell as we near the release date of Dorico, Steinberg's new scoring app in Q4 2016. With the knowledge that all previous notation programs such as Finale and Sibelius were a product of their resepctive decades, Daniel Spreadbury and his development team accepted the gargantuan task of reimagining and creating a brand new scoring app from the ground up nearly four years ago. Major kudos to the folks at Steinberg for stepping up with creative wisdom, bravery and cash to fund this project.

I am very excited to see how the new common-sense approach to writing and engraving music is going to work. Daniel has given us many sneak peaks in his "Making Notes" blog (blog.steinberg.net) already. The new Dorico GUI is set up on five creative modalities - simply Setup, Write, Engrave, Play and Print. You can sense this will be a winner, far more preferable to the tool-based or ribbon interface in Finale and Sibelius.

We invite you to weigh in with your thoughts on what you would like Dorico to be. No promises really. Just, a place for you to share your thoughts as we might together build a better mousetrap.
